Imeem's social media technology is based on the IM paradigm: a buddy list. Their most interesting feature, perhaps, is the ability to traipse around the network of buddies, looking at their blog postings, buddies of buddies, and so on. Imeem's blogs can be managed within the Imeem network, or can also be made accessible to the wide world.
Whether closed communities like Imeem will take off remains to be seen, but the notion that the instant messaging buddy list is the center of the universe is a solid architectural principle that will become ubiquitous.

What interests me about Imeem.com is the possibility of interest recognition and the power to associate unlearned shared interests within and across groups. The challenge is likely to be how to introduce unknown shared interests and enable ongoing interactions. A buddy list is certainly a first step. In fact, lists are not new and serve as simple tools to fuel socialization and append new knowledge. As vp of marketing for a provider of web-based communication tools, I used lists to help organize user generated content posted in message boards as well as instant messaging sessions. Over a million webmasters were using these tools as you can imagine we had lots of things listed. A London website, Last.fm, is also using lists created by individuals who list favorite music that is used to link similar tastes within a network and customize broadcasts for listeners. Moving forward Ill be watching to learn how Imeem.com addresses the challenge of generating repeat visits to multiple new groups and how often Imeem.com can make referrals and introduce members to new recognized interests. Additionally, how to limit recognized interests is likely to be challenging as well as so that undesirable content is not introdued. I wont even talk about instant translations . ;)
