More cell than landlines in US

News out from the FCC that the number of landlines in the US has officially been outstripped by cellphones. [Engadget]

"By the end of the year, there were 181.1 million cellphone subscribers, compared with 177.9 million access lines into U.S. homes and businesses, the Federal Communications Commission said in a biannual report."

Cellphones have already reached this peak in India, China, Norway and Sweden, to name a few. In Sweden there are actually more cellphone subscribers than inhabitants. Yes, that includes all age groups. So, given that some people don't use them at all, you're likely to find people out there with 2 or more cellphones. [Smartmobs]

Do you think landlines serve a purpose anymore? If so, what?

No. That's why I dumped mine 5 years ago and why I think the hype on residential VOIP is overblown. The latter might be interesting as new services get developed around it, but not until then.

The basic problem with landlines is that they reach a place, not a person. No one wants to talk to the empty air in my house - they want me. The landline gives the empty air.

Somebody still uses dialup... and it's amazing how many ways you can reuse copper to carry ethernet :)

I haven't had a landline since 1997.

I've been landline free for about a year and a half now, with no regrets. The only downside here is that it only leaves us one option for highspeed - cable. Our telco does not allow high speed purchase without a landline. Well, their loss.
