Om Malik on Microsoft URGE

Om Malik cut right to the chase regarding the Microsoft CES announcement of partnership with MTV on URGE:

[from Om Malik on Broadband : » In Digital Music, Its Gates Vs Jobs]

So in the end it will boil down to what is by now a familiar story: Bill versus Steve, Microsoft (add partner name here) versus Apple, windows media versus iTunes, some device (add brand name here) versus iPod. Justin Timberlake versus the Gorillaz! Dominatrix in pin stripes versus Diva in a black turtleneck.

Who will win? Not sure, but here is one thing which works against Bill G: coolness is not part of his company’s DNA, I mean Justin Timberlake for god sake! Even old farts like me know, he is sooooo over! What works against Apple? Steve being Steve; keeping the ecosystem closed. Come on, even the toughest bouncer outside the hottest club, once in a while lets the plebs in. How about some love for Sony and Sonos? Nothing for nothing, 2006 is shaping up to be a great year: there are skirmishes everywhere and since this is a sequel, well, let the popcorn pop, and enjoy the show!

2006 will be a bad, bad year for Microsoft. This will be another fizzle, since the iTunes/iPod dominance can't be shaken up by partnering with a tired TV channel. On other fronts, Microsoft's partnership with Palm has led to a annoyingly designed Treo (see David Pogue's review: A Marriage Not Made In Heaven) for another place where Microsoft partnerships come up with a mule, not a racehorse.

The imminent Kaliedoscope (the souped up Mac Mini that will become the entertainment hub for the living room) is going to sideswipe Microsoft like a velociraptor tearing into the side of a much larger, less agile T. rex.

I always said Microshit should simply shut down and go away quietly. But instead, they refuse to accept the fact that no one gives a sh*t about them and that everyone knows now what many have known for years...thats Microshit is nothing but well...shit.

I for one hope they get obliterated from existence and humiliated beyond any form of mercy. The future belongs to the real deal, Apple and Google and all those that prove themselves worthy. Microshit, Rhapsody, and all that other garbage can whither away or at least come up with a new 'innovative' idea to change the world rather than simply pullute the market with junk that no one wants.

An absolutely ghastly and myopic prejudiced vision. Microsoft is already a behemoth, and with MTV on its side, HISTORY people, Urge can be believed to be a big competitor to iTunes.Though i also like iTunes, but just check urge.com, just a single logo and the uber cool attitude MS is oozing will get everyone to check it out. Like with the xBox, urge can whip some Apple up.

It's interesting that Microsoft tries to compete in every area of computing. Their products would be much better if they would keep focus on a few core products. As it is, they come out with a new product, like Internet Explorer, do a good job on it for a while and then neglect it while they focus on something else. Meanwhile there are long standing bugs in other products like the document memory relese bug in Microsoft Word that still hasn't been fixed after at least 15 years. That's Microsoft's core strategy - only fix bugs if they are so bad that they directly threaten market share. It's much better to focus on undermining any technology that might give someone else a foothold in the market. Microsoft may well win this battle if they want to leverage their Windows monopoly power to do it but I think it would be a costly vicroty for them and even more costly for consumers.

I agree that 2006 is likely to be a bad year for Microsoft but I think that it's likely to be for two other reasons which were not mentioned in this article. One is Security. Microsoft hasn't gotten past their problems in that area. The other is the fact that many sites are beginning to realize just how expensive the TCO of Microsoft products is. Here where I work, we have been forced through several upgrade cycles (mainly for security reasons) when we would be just fine from a functional standpoint still using Windows NT. While it's true that Macintosh market share seems to have doubled in the past year or so (unfortunately the data is still thin) the trend which has really caught my eye is the number of places which are starting to use thin client.
