Yes, this could reflect the eTel subculture -- those involved in the world of telephony -- but I can't believe there isn't a single women out there somewhere working on something innovative in the field? Not a single professor, or entrepreneur?

I didn't dig too far, but take a look at the management team of MySQL: 10 or so execs, all white males. I am sure the management team there -- just like the organizers of the eTel conference -- have convinced themselves that they are simply getting the best people for the spots they have. But from the other perspective it starts to seem like selecting for people who fit in, who share the same mindset, and so on.

I don't hold that there should be a litmus test of 33% women or something, but the lack of any is certainly discouraging.

A few years ago at E-Tech in San Diego I had the good luck ot have dinner with Liz Lawley and Judith Meskill. As a novice to the scene I did notice that at the dinner table 4 of 21 people were women and that the conference was about 10% women overall. We talked about the nature of the industry, our education system and the minimal push to get women into hard sciences and math. Whomever is organizing this event should have tried a lot harder to make a diverse set of speakers.
