Via SocialPeople's RelaxedGuy, I bumped into this gem:
[from Married But Dating - MarriedSecrets.Com Fits The Bill]For Immediate Release
LOS ANGELES/EWORLDWIRE/May 24, 2004 --- With the popularity of Internet dating soaring, a new dating site stands out from the rest. MarriedSecrets.com touts itself as the only dating website specifically designed for married people.
Due to the anonymity of online dating, it has never before been easier for people to find each other both anonymously and with little effort. MarriedSecrets.com makes it especially easy for individuals who are looking for some relationship outside of marriage to find other likeminded people. The site is meant to serve those people who want to stay married, yet meet some quality people for discreet hook-ups for whatever reason.
The company stems out of the realization that there was a niche market for married people looking for dates. Upwards of 30 percent of the users of traditional matchmaker sites are married; MarriedSecrets.com was designed to tap into that market and serve those people specifically.
The site's founders felt that if they made a web site that was designed for married people, and if married people could feel comfortable about putting up an anonymous profile on the site, and hook up with likeminded people, then they would be successful.
Over 30% of online daters are married? No wonder they took "All The Good Ones Are Taken" as the site's motto.
On one hand, this could indicate a growing Scandinavianization [yes, you heard that word here first] of sexual attitudes: according to various surveys, many Scandinavians enjoy extramarital sex, and the culture is very relaxed about it. But I am betting that, even while large numbers of Americans are doing one thing behind closed doors, in pulpits and op/ed columns across the country we will hear this condemned as yet another Internet indecency.
I have real trouble reading this. Isn't it scand[i]navian? At least that's the word scandinavians use theirselves. I did a quick lookup at Google and it seems this weird spelling of "scandanavian" is quite widespread.
Also before you coin your term (if it's wrong or not), I would like to have some links about those various surveys =) I haven't seen this extramarital sex much different from many other countries in practice so I'm a bit sceptical about the authenticity of this research (is it American?). As we all know, also penguins and polar bears live here.
- scandinavian
I don't recall the most recent magazine article I read, but here's some evidence:
"In two studies by the Nordic Association for Clinical Sexology (Dalen (1987, 1997), a representative group was asked whether they had ever had sex with others while they lived in a steady relationship. The tendency seems to be that people have more extramarital sexual affairs." [http://www2.hu-berlin.de/sexology/IES/norway.html]
And in a second study: "In summary, a number of findings were consistent with Reiss's ideas. We found lesser religiosity and a greater acceptance of gender egalitarianism in different domains by Swedish students than by U.S. students. Support was also found for Reiss's proposal that Swedish people have more naturalistic views of sexuality. More Swedish students than U.S. students scored highly on accepting nudity, masturbation, and the desire for sex with many people as a natural and normal phenomena. The substantially higher rates of masturbation reported by Swedish students in other papers (Schwartz, 1993; Weinberg et al., 1995) provide additional support for their more naturalistic view of sex. There was also support for Swedes being less accepting of governmental restrictions concerning two of the three issues presented: homosexual behavior between consenting adults and first trimester abortions. Finally, there was support for the Swedish being more accepting of permissive sexual attitudes with regard to premarital sexuality." I will keep looking, but it seems that Scandinavians are more tolerant of extramarital sex, even if they don't necessarily do more of it than other people. Although it seems that at least Norwegians might also do it more.
Of course, this is not my research area.
Permalink to CommentOk, maybe it has grounds. I guess one reason could be the fact that it's not illegal to have extramarital sex (it was, once). Also, most of the younger generations are not very religional. Atheistic nature might also explain something what comes to marriage and it's grounds (over 65% of marriages end in divorse). Of course, this is not my field of research either.
A side note: guess what is the most popular dating service in Russia?
